The spalted ash boards by Bird on the Buddha, once shaped by hand, planed and sanded, are exposed to water to raise the grain. They are then re-sanded and soaked in food safe mineral oil. Finally the boards are warmed and then coated in a blend of organic hemp oil and locally produced beeswax.
The inspiration for these boards comes from the gorgeous grain of the wood from locally felled trees.
Spalting is a sought after discolouration of wood produced as a result of a fungus. The fungus is now dead but leaves behind stunning patterns enhancing the attractiveness of the grain.
