A medium sized raku fired decorative vase by Sarah Horlock. Hand decorated with a blue glaze with free-flowing brushwork, with flashes of metallic lustre. The beautiful crackled glazes characteristic of rakuware are not watertight, but are perfect for displaying dry flowers or as a statement piece in the home. Fired to around 1000c then taken out of the kiln, causing the glazes to crack due to thermal shock. The pots are then placed into a smoking chamber fillled with sawdust or shredded paper, which ignites and smokes and stains the bare clay and crackled glaze a beautiful smoky black. The stained clay surface and base has been sealed with beeswax.
