A small-sized raku fired decorative vase by Sarah Horlock. Hand decorated with either a blue, with flashes of metallic copper lustre, or neutral oatmeal glaze with free-flowing brushwork,. The beautiful crackled glazes characteristic of rakuware are not watertight, but are perfect as a statement piece in the home.Fired to around 1000c then taken out of the kiln, causing the glazes to crack due to thermal shock. The pots are then placed into a smoking chamber fillled with sawdust or shredded paper, which ignites and smokes and stains the bare clay and crackled glaze a beautiful smoky black. The stained clay surface and base has been sealed with beeswax.
Avoid displaying in strong sunlight for long periods to protect the lustre and smoked surface.
